road access

Main access trailhead parking for the highest summit in the contiguous 48 states of USA, and for many nearby summits and climbing routes and walls, ski mountaineering tours, camping, and for the south end of the John Muir Trail which connects to Yosemite National Park. Many of the climbs and hikes require a permit which is best obtained months in advance, or sometimes can be obtained the day before or same day.

As of 2018 there are no restrictions or fees for parking, but this might change in the future, so check with the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitors Center which is just south from the town of Lone Pine.

There is a store which sells some food.

There are some group campsites near the trailhead parking, but otherwise camping around the parking or trailhead is not permitted (but there are several possible camping locations down in the main valley.

Trailhead parking is reached by a well-designed wide asphalt road going west up from the town of Lone Pine, California.

In winter and early spring the Whitney Portal Road is normally gated shut about 3 km belore its end, but is usually drivable up to the gate.
