road access

The village of Log pod Mangartom (alt. 650m) is along the Predel Pass road, which is open all year long and connects the towns of Bovec (Slovenia) and Tarvisio (Italy), linking the Koritnica valley and the valley of the Rio del Lago. Log pod Mangartom (on the Slovenian side) is halfway between the pass and the Kluže fortress/canyon. Predel to Kluže = approx. 13km.

Reach the Log pod Mangartom access point (the National Park fence at alt. 700m) by entering the upper part of the Koritnica Valley, at the upper end of the village of Log, along a road signposted "Koritnica" (the road then soon switches to a forest road). There are only approx. 2km from the village to the fence, so that one may just as well use the free parking area at the upper end of the village, "under" the bridge.

Log pod Mangartom is a typical mountain village, with various restaurants, hotels, apartments. Log is the main place in the Koritnica valley, stretching out where the bed of the valley is the largest. Besides being the starting point for all alpine routes on Loška Stena, Log is also the starting point for the S sides of Mangart, of Jalovec, and of their satellites. Marked and secured mountain hiking paths (including some "very difficult" sections) start from Log, towards Jalovec, the Čez Brežice pass, and even Mangart. In winter, many frozen waterfalls can be approached from Log pod Mangartom, some of which are just above the village.
