The French Ridge Hut is a very simple NZ style mountain hut, perfect as a base for summits around Bonar Glacier, although access to Bonar from French Ridge can be dangerous (Glaciers / Avalanches).
No stove, no blankets, no kitchen equipment. There is a radio, there are mattresses and Toilet.
NZAC/Other Alpine Club Members: 15$
Youth (11-17): 15$
Children (10 under): Free
The only access to the French Ridge Hut is from Raspberry Flats Car Park and 18km up the West Matukituki Valley, past the Aspiring Hut, onto the Pearl Flats and up the French Ridge Track.
It takes between 6h and 9h to access. Do not underestimate the time is takes to go up the steep forest!
The French Ridge Track is very steep! It requires good footwear and a good physical condition.
In Winter, snow can make the access very difficult on the top portions of the French Ridge track in the forest. Once out of the forest, a good hour ski touring is required until the Hut.
