Nestled in the foothills of the massive Terskey Alatoo range in eastern Kyrgyzstan, Refuge Jalpak Tash is a traditional Kyrgyz yurt that serves as a comfortable "basecamp" for ski touring. The yurt is operated by 40 Tribes Backcountry Adventures, in partnership with families from the rural village at the foot of the mountains.
The yurt is located at 2,650m and accessed from the village via a 6km skin track. The yurt provides backdoor access to stunning alpine terrain that is appropriate for beginners or advanced backcountry skiers and riders, and offers what are hands-down some of the best views in Kyrgyzstan. The yurt is staffed by 40 Tribes' local partners, who make sure guests are properly styled out and always well fed.
The yurt is available for guided and self-guided reservations, as well as private bookings by independent guides. 40 Tribes additionally offers professionally instructed avalanche safety and ski/snowboard mountaineering courses.
The tour from the village to the yurt takes anywhere from 2-3 hours, depending on weather and conditions, the group’s level of fitness, and the number of times you stop along the way to visit with villagers! The skin track ascends gently and consistently from 1,800m to 2,650m along a well-established horse trail that is utilized year-round by locals. Guests can choose to travel to the yurt on horseback, or can hire horses to porter their gear.
