The cave is an impressive slash of rock featuring steep climbing largely on tufas. It is home to the route Chilam Balam and the amazing La Rubia (8c). There are 4 vertical routes on the front face of the cave on so/so rock, but the cave itself is all about steepness. A great place to escape the summer heat. The climbing is on tufas so it does take seepage in the winter, plus it is often quite cold.
Chilam Balam lies just outside Villanueva del Rosario. Villanueva del Rosario lies in the hill 40km N of Malaga and 80km W of Granada in southern Spain (Andalucia). The closest climbing areas are Archidona (Big Cave - 10 minutes drive), Loja (Lots of everything - 30 minutes drive) and El Chorro (1 hours drive). The area behind the village also contains a lot of other good climbing in the 5s to hard 7s. Plus there is a decent bouldering area in the talus that has fallen down from El Chamizo in the milleniums gone by.
There is an image of the cave athttp://www.rockclimbingcompany.co.uk/images/Chilam-Balam-Crag2.jpg.
Means of descent
Abseil or lower off.
There are topos at http://www.rockclimbingcompany.co.uk/Climbing_Areas_in_Spain_Andalucia.html (access is restricted, send an email if you are interested).
Access involves a 30 minute walk from the village or a 10 minute drive and 5 minute walk.
