description

Superb rock, magnificent views, a varied and logical route with slabs, cracks and overhangs, what more could you ask for?
The only downside is that its easy access makes it over popular!

Approach

Descend Aiguille du Midi ridge from the alpinists’ exit of the Cable car station and go the foot of the S face, right of the lowest point.

Route

More details to be added later

The crux is the second pitch, a superb S crack (5c/6a). After this the route trends always leftwards.

Descent

Several possibilities, for example abseil back down the Contamine route or next to the route "Midi Sonne" (western side of the S face.) This avoids carrying boots, ice axes, crampons etc up the route.

remarks

  • A historic route opened by Gaston Rebuffat, the great French alpinist.
  • If there are too many other parties, the route Midi Sonne, goes at a similar grade.
