description

A short training outing or bad weather option, good either early season when the ski domain is still closed, or from the mid-station, following the signposted track. N.B Since the "Arete Municpale" (local bylaw) of 2010 it is forbidden to ski up the pistes when the domain is open or the piste bashers are working.

Ascent

From the bottom station skin up to the mid-station (Charmillion) either up the piste, if it is closed or up a track mainly on the right, (summer mountain bike trail.) It is also possible to purchase a special "ski randonneurs" ticket for the telecabins, (one way, 6.90€ in 2016)
From Charmallion either:
Follow the dedicated trail for ski tourers (signposted), which starts just to the right of the Autannes chairlift, up to the top of the same chairlift. Be aware that this trail passes, for a couple of hundred metres, below an area which might be avalanche prone in particularly bad conditions. From the top of the lift go to the Col de Balme hut. After a very short descent, make your way up to the Tête de Balme, easiest if you go up diagonally to the right at first.
Or:
From Charmallion continue up the main track (4x4 in summer), until it is possible to cut up to the right, taking a line just to the right of the ridge used by the Plan des Reines ski drag, and so up to the summit.

Descent

Basically by the same route

remarks

See also Aiguillette des Possettes, for an option further away from the pistes. (More avalanche prone.)
