Descent on Argentière glacier

From the summit of Grands Montets (3233 m), descend on Rognons glacier by following the piste until an altitude of around 3100 meters. Then leave the piste and head towards the rocky Rognon at elevation 3000 on the map. Take the slope just to its right. Continue to descend the glacier primarily to the northeast towards spot elevation 2754 m (Moraine des Rognons). Then traverse on the right (southeast) for 200 meters to reach a slope (northeast) which easily leads to Argentière glacier (2580 meters).

Col du Chardonnet (3323m) - 750m 2h

Traverse Argentière glacier towards Chardonnet glacier. You generally access this glacier via the moraine situated plumb with Arête Straton which descends from the west summit of Aiguille d'Argentière, steep slope at the beginning. Take foot on the glacier around 2730 meters (left bank) and go primarily up the left bank (fairly steep slopes-S3) until around 3000 meters. Then the slope becomes less steep, follow it without difficulty until Col du Chardonnet (3323 m). The descent is often made on foot (45° - S4 for a short distance) with the help of a handrail safety rope or on skis on the left side of the slope (bergschrund at the bottom of the slope).

Fenêtre de Saleinaz : (3267m) - 200m 1h

Descend the left bank of Saleinaz glacier, pass under Grande Fourche without losing too much altitude and go up to Fenêtre de Saleinaz (steep at the end, skis possibly in the bag).

Notes: It is possible to shorten the loop by passing via Fenêtre du Tour instead of Fenêtre de Saleinaz (poor weather...). In this case, after, the bergschrund of Col du Chardonnet, descend (east) skirting the rocks resulting from spot elevation 3660 located on the east ridge of Chardonnet and climb (north) directly in a vast scoop towards Fenêtre du Tour which is clearly visible. The last part of the ascent is steep (skis in the bag). The descent on Tour glacier is made by skirting its left bank under Chardonnet and then reaching the Col du Passon route.

Upper Col du Tour and descent on Tour: (3289m) - 50m 2 hours and 30 minutes of descent.

Traverse under Tête Blanche towards Col Supérieur du Tour (northeast) which you cross (do not take Col du Tour). Descend Tour glacier via slopes which are fairly steep at the start. The glacier broadens and becomes less steep. Traverse it towards the west to reach its left bank. Leave it around 2450 meters, traverse towards the west to reach Ruisseau des Plagnards, follow its right bank until around 1650m. Then traverse on the right between two rock barriers to reach a large dale which leads to the village of Tour.

remarks

  • This circuit is easy to do by taking the first Grands Montets tram (8:30). It is also possible to sleep at Argentière refuge.
  • Steep slope at the beginning of Col du Chardonnet.
