weather and conditions

Beautiful settled weather, no wind.

Still quite a lot of snow. We put crampons on at the site of the old hut.

timing

Left Hornli Hut at 4am, summited at 11am, returned at Hornli hut at 9pm.

hut_comment

Quiet and friendly, the Zermatt guides are not doing the route yet as it is still not in summer condition. I found my old ice axe that I forgot there last year. The improvised meal that we got because of our late return was a bit spicy but thank you to the chef (who could not guess that Graham does not like garlic). The bottles of water were so wonderful that they felt good value for money.

personal comments

Got the route a bit wrong on the way down, after the old hut where we stayed too near the ridge. That's why, while we were looking forward to a meal similar to the wonderful one we had the night before, we only got soup and pastas, but it was still great.
Thanks to Clint who reassured us about the conditions when we were having some doubts looking at the east face from Klein Matterhorn.
